Help me, I’m on fire I’m burning with desire Keep your drinks and drugs I’m all fucked up on love Cut to the core of me And tell me what you see In my heart Time is such a thief She ran off with my hopes and dreams But oh, sweet relief The emptiness will set you free Search the shadows of my soul And find the piece that fits the hole In my heart Our brains are full of lies Our thoughts are devils in disguise Shouting all our fears Echoing between our ears And though I’m shaken by the sound I know the truth is always found In my heart In my heart Hard times will come again And violence strikes to the heart of men But what it is they fail to see Is we are one and you will always be In my heart In my heart In my heart

Life might bring me down And times they might get tough And I might have to slow this down But I’m never ever gonna give up I’ll never give up I’ll never give up No, I’m never ever Never ever gonna give up Life might give me lemons Well, I’ll squeeze them in my cup Add a little sugar, make lemonade But I’m never ever gonna give up I’ll never give up I’ll never give up No, I’m never ever Never ever gonna give up The clouds roll in and block that Sweet sunshine Can’t always see it but it’s Shining all the time Never give up I’ll never give up No, I’m never ever Never ever gonna give up I’ll never give up I’ll never give up No, I’m never ever Never ever gonna give up

Heavy 02:43
I know it’s heavy That load you carry I know it’s heavy That cross you bear I know your blessings Feel like a curse Everybody wants a piece of you There ain’t nothing worse Keep your head down Don’t blow your horn You can’t fly too high You can’t be forlorn I know it’s heavy That load you carry I know it’s heavy That cross you bear I know your heart Is big and true I’ve got nothing but love And respect for you That shadow you cast Well, that’s pretty big too But you lean on back And let the light shine through I know it’s heavy That load you carry I know it’s heavy That cross you bear

Reckless 03:33
I drive too fast In my car It’s never going to Get me very far I drink too much Stay out late I always seem to Get carried away Reckless, reckless I’m a reckless wreck I’m gonna wreck this life I’ve been wild all my days And that ain’t ever gonna change I’m gonna wreck, wreck this life Youngest child From a broken home All the madness Gave me a travelin’ bone I can’t go back It’s too late now I can’t slow down I don’t even know how Reckless, reckless I’m a reckless wreck I’m gonna wreck this life I’ve been wild all my days And that ain’t ever gonna change I’m gonna wreck, wreck this life I’m running from the truth Down the roads of misspent youth Wasted fruit is rotting on the vine Oh, what a price to pay I can’t remember yesterday It’s nothing new, it happens all the time I’m gonna wreck, wreck this life Oh, I’m reckless, reckless I’m a reckless wreck I’m gonna wreck this life I’ve been wild all my days And that ain’t ever gonna change I’m gonna wreck, wreck this life I’m gonna wreck, wreck this life

Black streaks, shadows, original sin We’ve all got our demons Can I get an amen I tried to be good I finally cracked And when you flip that switch There’s no turning back Lord, send me a train Send me a boxcar Carry me away Lord, send me a train Send me a getaway car Help me escape Well, I done did the deed And now the damage is done And it’s too broke to fix I’ve got nowhere to run I’m down on my knees Got my ear to the track Praying God how I wish I could take this all back Lord, send me a train Send me a boxcar Carry me away Lord, send me a train Send me a getaway car Help me escape Lord, I made a mistake Oh, I’m in trouble now Won’t you send me a train Lord, send me a train Send me a boxcar Carry me away Lord, send me a train Send me a getaway car Help me escape

Gypsy 02:40
I ain’t got a home in this world no more I’m gonna find me a spot on the Carolina shore Gonna build me a shack and I won’t be a gypsy no more I won’t be a gypsy I won’t be a gypsy I won’t be a gypsy no more I won’t be a gypsy I won’t be a gypsy I won’t be a gypsy no more I’m all alone in this great big world I’m gonna find me an angel and make her my girl Put a ring on her finger and I won’t be alone no more I won’t be alone I won’t be alone I won’t be alone no more I won’t be alone I won’t be alone I won’t be alone no more I’ve been wandering all my days Been living my life in a vagabond haze But one of these days I ain’t gonna wander no more I ain’t gonna wander I ain’t gonna wander I ain’t gonna wander no more I ain’t gonna wander I ain’t gonna wander I ain’t gonna wander no more I ain’t got a home in this world no more I’m gonna find me a spot on the Carolina shore Gonna build me a shack and I won’t be a gypsy no more I won’t be a gypsy I won’t be a gypsy I won’t be a gypsy no more I won’t be a gypsy I won’t be a gypsy I won’t be a gypsy no more I won’t be a gypsy no more No, I won’t be a gypsy no more (That’s a damn lie)

The Fighter 03:47
Where you are I’ve never been Seems like all you’ve known Is a heavy hand I want to climb down And lift you up Let you drink from my loving cup ‘Cause, baby, you sure do shine And every little thing is gonna be alright I might take some time But love never gives up the fight The sky is gray The rain is falling down The mood is heavy All over town But look right here Here’s a little spark There’s always hope Even in the darkest dark Now, baby, you sure do shine And every little thing is gonna be alright I might take some time But love never gives up the fight I’ve got love for miles and miles I’d give it all just to see you smile Walk through hell by your side Drain the well and open up the sky Yeah, baby, you sure do shine And every little thing is gonna be alright I might take some time But love never gives up the fight

Patience 03:42
All this time alone Brought me back to myself It’s like finally coming home After years and years spent someplace else But now I realize what it is that lies On the other side of loneliness I caught your eye (eye) Patience is a virtue One I learned a little late It took some time to find someone Who was worth the wait Worth the wait In this cosmic swirl Of life and love and time and space The ever-spinning world All I can see is your sweet face And now I wait for you Underneath the stars tonight And I know that you’ll come to me If I play my cards right (right?) Patience is a virtue One I learned a little late It took some time to find someone Who was worth the wait Worth the wait Your hand upon my back Made the whole world melt away All I’ve ever done is run But for you, for you I’ll stay For you I’ll stay For you I’ll stay Patience is a virtue One I learned a little late It took some time to find someone Who was worth the wait Worth the wait You’re worth the wait

The Ground 03:14
Well, it’s a hard day’s work When you’re living off the land When you’re digging in the dirt With your bare hands But it’s worth all the worry And every drop of sweat When you live from your heart What you give is what you get All the sons and the daughters All the people that we knew They all went off to college Now they’re making do But there’s something that is missing And it grips them through and through But I found it in the ground And I brought some back for you So, let’s build a tiny house On a sixteen-acre plot And let’s make a new beginning And redefine “a lot” We might lose all the hard stuff But you’ll always have this spot Right here, in my heart ‘Cause what you give is what you’ve got All the sons and the daughters All the people that we knew They all went off to college Now they’re making do But there’s something that is missing And it grips them through and through But I found it in the ground And I brought some back for you So, we’ll cultivate the earth And we’ll cast the seed Let it grow inside of us We’ll have all we’ll ever need I’m so grateful for the bounty And I’m grateful for the truth And I’m grateful for the ground That brought me back to you

about

Barb's debut solo offering, The Fighter, is a quasi concept album that elevates and jerks you through the emotional highs and lows of falling in and out of love, struggling to remain creative in the face of turmoil and strained relationships, and maybe more than anything, battling (and eventually surrendering to and making peace with) the shadows that lurk within all of us. While much of the album artwork depicts the physical conflict, this record is ultimately about accepting that the flip side to shining brightly is knowing the darkest dark, and that we must embrace the eternal balancing act that is required to keep ourselves from plunging into the depths or floating so high that we are no longer grounded and we lose our authenticity. The balance bar that appears repeatedly throughout the record is hope.

"We might lose all the hard stuff, but you'll always have this spot, right here in my heart, 'cause what you give is what you've got." -The Ground

"Hard times will come again, and violence strikes to the hearts of men, but what it is they fail to see, is we are one and you will always be in my heart." -Heart

"Life might give me lemons, well I'll squeeze them in my cup, add a little sugar and make lemonade but I'm never ever gonna give up." -Never Give Up

"But look right here, here's a little spark, there's always hope even in the darkest dark." -The Fighter

So the message here is this: Whatever you're going through, hang on to whatever little spark you can find, because on the other side of the darkness there is light. I promise.
